Solving the Problem - 8A

My opportunity is for people using their phone and driving. It is for all the people who have a driver’s license and use their phones. With technology advancing, more people are prone to using their phone while driving. There needs to be a system or program in your phone that knows who the driver is and to stop them from using their phone except for GPS.

There are some programs now, but I do not believe people know about them, nor do I think they are efficient. I would sell an app that allows access to all music playing programs and GPS/map apps. If the driver is going over a certain speed limit, everything else in the phone would be disabled. I would make sure there wasn’t a notification for any messages. The only way people would be allowed to get notifications while driving is by phone calls. Any other form of messaging, such as Facebook messages or texts, would not send a notification to the driver.

To make people feel motivated to stop using their phone while driving, there would be incentives. If an app teamed up with certain brands/companies (i.e. Starbucks) to give incentives, I believe there would be less people using their phones while driving because they would have a good motivation to not using their phone. For example, if a person were to drive 50 miles without using their phone that entire time, they would receive a free Starbucks drink or a coupon.

  1. This is an awesome idea. I love it!

Having a reward will definitely attract people to not use their cell phones especially for Starbucks. You can also have these companies pay you for attracting customers to them. I may be a better idea to offer half off coupons or BOGO coupons so companies can make a profit and they will be paying you for the customers you have brought in. Keep up the good work! :)

  2. Hey Shelby,
I appreciate how your idea does the public a service by helping mitigate texting and driving. I've known too many people that have either gotten in an accident, or been centimeters away from one due to either themselves or another driver being distracted by technology. I like the integration of technology, and have a suggestion of my own that might improve downloads. A program like this would resonate very effectively with parents, but the (15, 16, 17 y/o) child may not be motivated to install it, even with the incentives. I suggest including some sort of backdoor utilizing parent iTunes accounts to install the app and be able to activate it when they know their child is driving. It wouldn't be a tracking app (unless you felt like integrating that, but that would probably alienate a big market), but parents could bypass traditional download processes for the good of their children. Great idea, can't wait to see how it develops!

  3. Hi Shelby! I really love this app idea! The app has the potential to prevent so many accidents and I think the use of incentives will really draw people to the app and motivate them to use it. The incentives provide people another reason to use the app and I think those incentives will really impact the popularity of the app. I know if there was an app out right now like your idea I would use it and I know many friends who would too!
